Coronavirus Guide

The coronavirus, which is spreading throughout the US and throughout the world is the same virus that caused SARS. The virus still causes illness, and some people are extremely sick. It is best to get vaccinated to avoid getting sick. You can also stop the spread of infection by adopting healthy habits. This includes having a good indoor air circulation, social distancing and wearing a mask in public spaces. Being up-to-date on your medication can save you from serious illness, hospitalization, or even death if you are ill.

A single SARS CoV-2 virus particle (called a virion) is about 80 nanometers across. It has a layer of protein protecting a ball of RNA. It contains the genetic code needed to make viruses. A spike protein that is on the surface of the virus binds to a receptor on healthy cells, which is usually a protein called ACE2. This allows the virus into the cell. Once inside the cell, it can hijack the host’s protein-making system to produce tens of millions of copies of itself. These virions exit the cell to infect other cells and create more virions.

Infected people can experience symptoms like fever, a sore throat, a ranny or stuffy nose, and a cough. Some people experience more serious symptoms like the heart and lung problems. Most people recover without long-term effects.
